9 Techniques to Help you Maintain a Positive Mindset

October 20, 2021

Many situations in life are beyond our immediate control. Some things are unpredictable and unavoidable. However, your mindset is something that you can control. And with practice, you can learn to maintain a positive mindset in any situation. By learning how to respond to life’s challenges with a positive mindset, you’ll grow as a person and move closer to your dreams.

Here are 9 techniques to help you maintain a positive mindset:

1. Look for a solution

Seeking a solution is much more effective than wallowing in a problem. Focusing on the issue only drags down your mindset and mood, sometimes leading to anxiety and depression. So, instead, seek out creative ways to overcome the challenge.

And if, for some reason, you can’t find a solution, then face it head-on and push through. Not all problems are meant to be solved. Some are intended to be experienced so that you come out stronger and may even serve to help you fulfill your purpose in life.

2. Change the way you look at things

Remember that your mindset is a choice you make. You get to choose how you perceive and experience this world. Even when we feel like all hope is lost and there is no light at the end of the tunnel, we can choose to stay positive.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Dr. Wayne Dyer

When we choose to view challenges as opportunities for personal growth, we take back our power. We will no longer fear whatever life throws at us when we realize that sometimes things happen not to hurt us but to direct us to the path that serves our highest good.

So the next time you experience something difficult, ask yourself:

  • How does this serve me?
  • What can I learn from this?
  • How can I be of service at this moment?
  • How can I meet this moment, this person, this situation with compassion and love?
  • How does this experience allow me to impact the lives of others?

3. Be willing and able to laugh

Laughter is good for the soul. It allows us to shift from a place of negativity into happiness, even if just for a few moments.

I know you’re like, Val, I don’t usually feel like laughing when faced with difficulties. But let me tell you, there are so many times that I’ve sat on my couch and busted out laughing, often at myself, trying to figure out “what was I thinking” or sometimes at the situation, like “this is a hot mess.”

Life is what you make it. You get to choose how you want to respond to a difficult situation. So even when all seems lost, sometimes all you need is a good laugh. Connect with a friend, listen to your favorite podcast, or watch funny YouTube videos to shift your mood.

4. Speak to yourself in a positive manner

What you say to yourself matters. Positive words lead to a positive mindset. So whenever you find yourself in a tough spot, encourage yourself with words of love and compassion.

5. Feed your mind with positive things

We are constantly bombarded with negativity, whether from the things we see on the news and social media or from the type of conversations we have. Remember, negative input leads to negative output

So, instead, fill your mind with positive ideas, words, and images. Be very protective of what you allow into your “space.” And only feed your mind with things that serve you.

6. Be grateful

Gratitude keeps you in a positive frame of mind. I greet each new day with: “Good Morning and thank you.” It helps me to start the day off on the right note. And even though everything may not be perfect, I am thankful I made it to another day. Each new day brings with it endless possibilities.

“When we begin our days with thoughts of gratitude, it helps our brain scan for positivity; we can focus on the good things around us and go into the day with a feeling of happiness and gratefulness,” Forbes.

Consider keeping a gratitude journal and make a practice of entering into it daily. This daily practice will help you remember and be grateful for all the beautiful things and people in your life. So when challenges do arise, they seem significantly less important when you think about all you have to be thankful for.

7. Stay present

Keep your focus on making progress in this very moment. Often, we get anxious and sometimes even depressed because we spend most of our time worrying about the future or dredging up the past.

Leave the past in the past. Stop worrying about what hasn’t happened yet and focus on what you can accomplish in this moment. Ask yourself, “What can I do today to bring me one step closer to my dreams and to the person I want to become?”

8. Volunteer

Giving to others connects us and makes us feel part of something larger than ourselves. It fills our hearts and souls and is a great way to bring a feeling of positivity to our lives.

Volunteering also provides perspective and allows you to see the world in a whole new light. Through volunteering, you begin to realize that we all have struggles to overcome. You are not alone. You also become more grateful for what you have because you learn that so many people are trying to survive with far less.

9. Surround yourself with positive people

The people we associate with influence the way we think. So, surround yourself with people who inspire you, believe in you, and want you to succeed.

You have the power to choose a positive mindset.

Your mindset is one of the things entirely under your control. All that is required is to make a conscious effort to seize control of your thoughts.

You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can control how you react. By managing your mindset, you gain far more control over your life and your destiny.
